The Mountain of Refuge
South of Makkah stands the mountain that hid the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr (RA) for three nights during the migration to Madinah — one of the most dramatic moments in Islamic history.
The Hijrah
~4 km south
Fleeing the Quraysh, the Prophet ﷺ and his closest companion climbed this mountain by night and took refuge in a cave near its summit — the first shelter of the journey that would carry Islam from Makkah to Madinah, and into history.
At the cave mouth
The quiet miracle
The pursuers reached the very entrance — and turned away. A spider’s web across the opening and a dove nesting beside it made the cave appear long undisturbed. Protection arrived not as thunder, but as the smallest of creatures.
Quran 9:40
Spoken inside
When Abu Bakr (RA) feared discovery, the Prophet ﷺ answered with the words the Quran preserved forever. Pilgrims stand at this mountain and hear the verse differently — it was said here.
2–3 hrs up
Fit visitors only
The path to the cave is longer and steeper than Jabal al-Noor — a serious rocky ascent best begun straight after Fajr, in proper shoes, with water. The cave entrance near the summit is narrow, as it was that night.
30–45 min
What most pilgrims do
Most visitors stand at the mountain’s base, hear the story where it happened, and make dua looking up at the heights that sheltered the message. The visit is complete without the climb — the mountain does the speaking.
With Jabal al-Noor
Full Ziyarat
Thawr rises south of the city, al-Noor northeast — the mountain of refuge and the mountain of revelation, both in a single unhurried drive along with the Hajj lands and Jannat al-Mualla.
